Course Description:

This course covers the more specialised areas of construction technology. It discusses civil engineering, specialised construction techniques such as demolition and underpinning, building management processes and facilities management.

Course Objectives:

• Methods and machinery used in earthworks
• Requirement of dewater and stabilise soils and how this can be achieved
• Used of cofferdams and caissons as an aid to construction in difficult ground conditions
• Various methods of bridge construction and the reasons for their selection
• Reasons for carrying out underpinning and the various methods available
• Construction of roads and railways and the machinery and methods used
• Tilt-up panel method of construction and its advantages and disadvantages
• Process and operation of facilites management
• Refurbishment of existing buildings and the reasons why it is needed
• Modern approaches to the maintenance of buildings
